Ode to the Caregiver

When someone you love is hurting and you can’t protect them from the pain
It tears your heart out, causing much grief, that is a normal refrain.
While the best interests of the patient is everyone’s intention
That doesn’t stop the agony amidst the intervention.
For when you truly love another, and watch what they go through
It touches something deep inside, forever changing you.
It isn’t easy to sit and see what they endure
At times you feel like running right out of the door.
But staying put and advocating is what you need to do
For that patient who’s a person that is very loved by you.
Each one of us as caregiver have a central goal
That isn’t learned or taught but seems to be an innate role.
We want the best for those we love and so we persevere
And do the best that we can for those we hold most dear.
We put our loved one’s life in the hands of expert others
And many tears are shed by lots of fathers and mothers.
If love could make our loved one better and send all their disease away
The bells would ring, the song birds sing to praise the healing day.
